An Easy Guide To Storing Summer Tires | Edmond, OK
Jul 24, 2019
Friends, it’s almost time. Winter is quickly approaching and that means you’ll soon be storing those summer tires away. I know this is a true bummer to think about but it’s inevitable and that means it’s time to start planning where those tires are going to spend the next six months. Luckily, we have that planned out already right here on this week’s blog! Check it out below and let’s get your tires home planned before your scrambling this winter!
We want to start off this week’s blog with a bit of important advice. And that is to clean your tires before storing them away. Why? Well, during use, your tires tend to accumulate brake dust, dirt, road grime, and all sorts of other nasty gunk. If this sits on your tires for long periods of time, it can cause damage to your tires. So, with that being said, grab soap, a tire brush, and a bucket of water and treat your tires to a bath. Be sure to give your tires ample time to dry off before storing them away. We also recommend using an approved wheel cleaner and avoid using tire gloss or dressing.
Now that your tires are clean and dry, it’s time to place them into a large, dark, airtight plastic bag. Doing so will keep oil compounds from escaping which will lead to your tires drying out. Pro tip! Lawn and garden bags work perfectly for this! Once you’re done, secure each bag with a zip tie or tape after removing as much air as possible.
Next, we recommend storing your tires upright. If you can, try to avoid stacking them. Stacking tires can cause damage to your tires. But if you keep your wheels mounted, you will want to stack them. And in the chance that you do not choose to put your tires into bags, be sure to keep them white to white and black to black. This will keep your tires from becoming stained.
Now, the most important part! Always keep your tires away from ozone sources like electric motors, furnaces, or basement sump pumps. Also, your tires should be kept in climate-controlled, dry places. Extreme temperatures and wet areas can cause damage to your tires. So consider keeping your tires in places like basements, climate-controlled garages or workshops.
Lastly, if you’re not going to be using a vehicle for an extended period of time, it’s important to take the vehicle for a ride for a few minutes in between uses. Why? Doing so will ensure that your tire’s rubber compounds stay lubricated and supple. Plus, it will also help relieve stress on the tires and keep them healthy until you’re ready to use the vehicle once more!
